She was born in Skopje, Macedonia to an Albanian family on 26th August Since the childhood, she was a keen believer in God and often used to visit the church. By coming in the close contact with the church, she developed a deep interest in the life of missionaries. She got inspired y the work of nuns, so she joined the Order of Loreto Nuns in Ireland. She moved to Kolkata Calcutta to work as a teacher when she was just 18 years old.

Since then her journey of helping the needy and poor started. She received the Indian citizenship. She replaced her Loreto way of dressing with a white cotton saree with blue orders. Soon the white saree with blue borders became the identity of Mother Teresa and has made the home in the heart of people all around the world.

Soon many other young women highly inspired to help the people in need joined her. Facing many difficulties at the beginning soon they got the recognition from the people and the government. The Missionaries of Charity started their charity work of helping the poor in the whole country. They built hospices, schools, clinics, shelters, hospitals to help the needy in entire India. The organization started with 13 members now had the thousands of volunteers, full-time workers.

By the Missionaries of Charity numbered about brothers and 5, sisters worldwide, operating missions, schools and shelters in countries. Soon she traveled the world to help people. As the years passed she started suffering from the heart problems.

She had two heart attacks in and respectively. For almost seventeen years she led a sheltered life teaching history and geography. Then one day while returning from a visit, she saw the slums of Kolkata. The sight broke her heart. She was appalled by the misery which she saw. The sight disturbed her mind and made her sleepless for days.

She wanted to do something to alleviate the suffering of the poor of the city. She knew that her society would not permit such a work. She prayed deeply for Gods guidance and direction. Finally, on the 10th September, , during a train journey to Darjeeling, she heard the voice of God telling her to leave the convent and to go out and serve his abandoned children. Since then she did not look back. She felt it as an order. She left her sheltered life of the convent on 18th Aug.

She began her work with a school for slum children of Kolkata. She adopted as her dress a simple white sari with blue borders and with a cross pined at the shoulder. Her first helper, a young Bengali girl joined her in Gradually, many young girls came to be part of her work.
