Inequalities in Mental Health Over the last several years, different theories have been utilized to explain the societal factors in the quality of mental health. The basic idea is to understand which variables will have the greatest impact on the person's ability to contribute to society. The social structure theory is taking a unique perspective in studying the problem. To fully understand its importance requires looking at the main ideas and why it was chosen.

Together, these elements will illustrate how this influences mental health and the effects it is having on contemporary thinking. Gabbidon, Cole, The social structure theory believes that the economic class will have a direct impact on the quality of care, treatment options and the effects on society itself. Bourdieu's theory, postulated in the late s, they report as dealing with the way in which class status provides a sort of collective capital, and in which "essentially institutionalized relationships of mutual acquaintance and recognition" provide for the reproduction of class standing in the next generation and its support within the present generation.

In general, it seems to approach social capital in terms of symbolic power and social inequality, much as many other writers would approach capitalist economic power. Coleman's theory, however, takes Bourdieu's ideas about social inequality springing from the heavy-armed application of social capital and perhaps taking a very upper class view of things presents social capital as a necessary part of the nation's moral fiber.

Coleman seems to see social capital as a sort of norming process and positively mutual obligations in society, a kind…… [Read More]. The education system in Britain currently exists as a hierarchical system enabling class differences to continue to persist despite some policy changes that would help facilitate a more equitable program for all involved. Is the educational system a ladder of opportunity?

A ladder of opportunity should be considered something that facilitates achievement for all individuals irrespective of their race, national origin or social class.

Many consider the educational system a "ladder of opportunity" because education can facilitate achievement and professional growth and wealth for those that pursue it to its highest levels. However, within the UK the education system is not equitably accessible to all levels of the population, and because of this the system actually reinforces and perpetuates existing class differences that already exist within the country.

Social Contradiction the Contradiction Between. Franklin's autobiography demonstrates a truly American kind of businessman, because he so neatly embodies all of the assumptions and logical fallacies that American capitalism depends on in order to justify its dominance in an ostensibly equitable and representative society.

Where Franklin's autobiography demonstrates the peculiar appeal to divine right that is used to justify the inequity of American capitalism, Herman Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener demonstrates the almost willful obtuseness necessary for any apologists of capitalism who must interact with the exploited lower classes on a regular basis.

The narrator of Bartleby the Scrivener is entirely unaware of anything outside the extremely limited range of his own preconceived ideas, which is both why Bartleby's passive resistance stuns him so much and he is ultimately unable to come to terms with Bartleby's death.

He practically admits as much when he says "the easiest way of life is the best," because the easiest…… [Read More]. Social issue alcohol drugs consider a social issue interested. Even if "jobs" were provided for every single homeless or unemployed individual in the country, this would be little more than a band aid; it would be hopeless inadequate to address the larger and longer-term problem, which is a basic inequality in education.

Since he belonged to the lower class, he told me he had to work extra harder to overcome many obstacles in order to change his socioeconomic status.

According to Marx, there are two main classes in society: The capitalists owned the means of production while the workers sold their labor to earn a living. Marx used his theory to describe a capitalist society where individuals are only concerned about their own success.

When incorporating this theory into society, the capitalists are found at the upper class with full possession of wealth, power and prestige. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the middle class have greater access to opportunities as compared to the lower class.

Luckily, an individual is not condemned to stay in the socioeconomic status they are born in forever as they can move out of it through things such as education or marriage. Moving from one societal class to the other is termed as social mobility. They are taken to the best schools and hospitals in the world, and they will never sleep hungry.

As such, they tend to stay comfortable and in most cases are nurtured in a way to maintain the status quo. On the contrary, those of the lower classes in society have to work extra harder so as to get access to such opportunities. For instance, a child of the lower class can only get access to the best schools if they perform exceptionally well in school and are awarded a scholarship.

Critics though have come out to dispute claims that anyone can attain material success if they work hard simply because society does not expose us to equal opportunities. Therefore, it is only fare if those in governance can make grounds favorable for the less privileged in society to compete equally with the privileged.

In conclusion, I have really learnt a lot from the interview process, having had it with someone of a different social status from mine. I was really proud of my interviewee because he did not seem to be weighed down with his social status. He vividly stated that though he was born into the lowest ranking class in society, his aim was to change the status quo.

From this I learnt that attitude plays a very important role when it comes to success or failure of individuals in society. There are those who pity themselves and accept to stay in their status quo though unpleasant, and there are those who fight against all odds to better themselves.
